The place: Kopi Hia Tai Gee is the second outlet of the 60-year-old Hia Tai Gee on Wisutkasat Rd. Like its big brother, this shophouse café oozes old-school ambiance with seven small marble-top tables, wooden chairs and grandpa regulars. It’s self-service here, so order your favorites at the counter and wait to be called to pick up your food.
Selection: The menu features selections that are good for any hour of the day, including a good selection of sandwiches (ham and cheese) or filling dishes like roti with green curry and salmon steak.
Must-haves: Thai-style coffee is a highlight at Kopi Hai Tai Gee. There are three versions available: the black “Original” (hot or cold), the mellow “Formula 1” (hot or cold) and the rich “Formula 2” (hot or cold). Or you can opt for farang-style brews like latte and mocha. There are various sets, but go for the popular khai song krueng—an omelet sprinkled with minced pork and green beans, served with a toasted sandwich of Chinese sausage and muu yaw.
